Modern Foreign Languages KKPDs
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands that goes right to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, it goes right to his heart.”
“Learning a foreign language and the culture that goes with it, is one of the most useful things we can do to broaden the empathy and imaginative sympathy and cultural outlook of children.”
Foreign Languages at Hillside aims to encourage interest in and enjoyment of how to speak and write in another language and the culture of another country. We want to give children an understanding of key vocabulary across various aspects of daily life and the names of places and people associated with the country.
This is achieved through a range of learning opportunities and experiences delivered separate to our enquiry as a discrete subject. Children learn key knowledge and are encouraged to develop the skills of languages such as authentic pronunciation, and the ability to communicate ideas, facts and feelings in the foreign language.
A year 6 linguist can:
- Describe the weather, classroom objects and information about themselves in French.
- Name places and famous people from France and share some facts.
- Hold a simple conversation of 5 – 6 phrases about an aspect they have learned.
