Foreign Languages at Hillside aims to encourage interest in and enjoyment of how to speak and write in another language and the culture of another country.  We want to give children an understanding of key vocabulary across various aspects of daily life and the names of places and people associated with the country.

This is achieved through a range of learning opportunities and experiences delivered separate to our enquiry as a discrete subject.  Children learn key knowledge and are encouraged to develop the skills of languages such as authentic pronunciation, and the ability to communicate ideas, facts and feelings in the foreign language.

A year 6 linguist can:

• Describe the weather, classroom objects and information about themselves in French.
• Name places and famous people from France and share some facts.
• Hold a simple conversation of 5 – 6 phrases about an aspect they have learned.
