History in a Nutshell
“We are not makers of history- we are made by history”
Martin Luther King
“The more you know about he past, the better prepared you are for the future”
Theodore Roosevelt
History at Hillside aims to encourage interest in and enjoyment of the past. We want to give children an understanding of the development of British History, Europe and the rest of the world over time, securing a good chronological understanding of the past and knowing the impact these developments have on the present day.
This is achieved through a range of learning opportunities and experiences delivered through an enquiry approach as a curriculum driver. Children learn key knowledge and are encouraged to develop the skills of a historian such as interpreting evidence and making judgements.
A year 6 historian can:
- Explain what is meant by chronological order.
- Describe a period of history and what changes took place.
- Explain how a period of history had an impact and caused a change.
- Name at least 2 periods of history and share some key knowledge from each.
