Key Knowledge Progression Documents

Key Knowledge Progression Documents (KKPDs) have been developed by our Trust and are used, alongside the National Curriculum to ensure that the curriculum is ambitious, broad and balanced.  Each area of the curriculum (with the exception of English and Maths) have their own document which is used by class teachers and subject leaders to plan the content of the curriculum.

Science KKPDs

Science at Hillside aims to encourage interest in and enjoyment of the world and how it behaves.  We want to give children an understanding of different aspects of biology, chemistry and physics and a thirst for scientific enquiry.

This is achieved through a range of learning opportunities and experiences delivered through an enquiry approach as a curriculum driver.  Children learn key knowledge and are encouraged to develop the skills of a scientist such as carrying out investigations and questioning the world around them.

A year 6 scientist will be able to:

  • Plan and carry out a fair test and explain the findings.
  • Describe habitats, plants and food chains.
  • Describe how plants and animals have evolved and adapted over time.
  • Describe different materials and their properties.
  • Explain different forces and their effect.

Art and Design KKPDs

Art at Hillside aims to encourage interest in and enjoyment of drawing, painting and sculpting.  We want to give children an understanding of techniques to create effects, the different media that can be used and the work of different artists.

This is achieved through a range of learning opportunities and experiences delivered through an enquiry approach as a curriculum enhancer.  Children learn key knowledge and are encouraged to develop the skills of an artist such as techniques using line, colour, pattern, texture and shape for effect.

A year 6 artist can:

  • Describe an art technique and say why it is effective.
  • Explain how to show emotion and movement in art.
  • Name 2 artists and talk about their work.

Computing KKPDs

Computing at Hillside aims to encourage interest in and enjoyment of algorithms, developing and using different programs and how information technology can be used beyond school.  We want to give children an understanding of how different technologies can be helpful and how they can use the internet and search engines safely.

This is achieved through a range of learning opportunities and experiences delivered as a discrete subject separate to our enquiry.  Children learn key knowledge and are encouraged to develop the skills of computing such as keyboard and word processing functions, the use of spreadsheets to collect and interpret data and how to write programs in order to carry out simple tasks.

A year 6 computing student can:

  • Describe a program they have made to carry out a simple task.
  • Explain how they can use search engines and the internet.
  • Describe how they can keep themselves safe online.

Design and Technology KKPDs

Design and Technology at Hillside aims to encourage interest in and enjoyment of the designing and making process.  We want to give children an understanding of how to research into different products, the designing process – including testing ideas – and then making and evaluating their product.

This is achieved through a range of learning opportunities and experiences delivered through an enquiry approach as a curriculum enhancer.  Children learn key knowledge and are encouraged to develop the skills of a designer such as how to strengthen the materials they use and how to evaluate the effectiveness of their product.

A year 6 designer can:

  • Talk about how they design a project.
  • Explain how they choose the materials and tools they used in a project.
  • Explain why their project was good and what they could have done to make it better.
  • Describe food that they have made and how they did it.

Geography KKPDs

Geography at Hillside aims to encourage interest in and understanding of the world around us.  We want to give children an understanding of various locations around the world, the different human and physical features around us and the people that inhabit our world.

This is achieved through a range of learning opportunities and experiences delivered through an enquiry approach as a curriculum driver.  Children learn key knowledge and are encouraged to develop the skills of a geographer such as using maps and carrying out fieldwork.

A year 6 geographer can:

  • Describe at least 2 different locations around the UK and the world.
  • Describe what human and physical features are and give some examples.
  • Explain how we use maps, atlases and globes to locate seas, continents, countries and other places.

History KKPDs

History at Hillside aims to encourage interest in and enjoyment of the past.  We want to give children an understanding of the development of British History, Europe and the rest of the world over time, securing a good chronological understanding of the past and knowing the impact these developments have on the present day.

This is achieved through a range of learning opportunities and experiences delivered through an enquiry approach as a curriculum driver.  Children learn key knowledge and are encouraged to develop the skills of a historian such as interpreting evidence and making judgements.

A year 6 historian can:

  • Explain what is meant by chronological order.
  • Describe a period of history and what changes took place.
  • Explain how a period of history had an impact and caused a change.
  • Name at least 2 periods of history and share some key knowledge from each.

Modern Foreign Languages KKPDs

Foreign Languages at Hillside aims to encourage interest in and enjoyment of how to speak and write in another language and the culture of another country.  We want to give children an understanding of key vocabulary across various aspects of daily life and the names of places and people associated with the country.

This is achieved through a range of learning opportunities and experiences delivered separate to our enquiry as a discrete subject.  Children learn key knowledge and are encouraged to develop the skills of languages such as authentic pronunciation, and the ability to communicate ideas, facts and feelings in the foreign language.

A year 6 linguist can:

  • Describe the weather, classroom objects and information about themselves in French.
  • Name places and famous people from France and share some facts.
  • Hold a simple conversation of 5 – 6 phrases about an aspect they have learned.

Music at Hillside aims to encourage interest in and enjoyment of singing, playing an instrument, and appreciating the music of others.  We want to give children an understanding of technical terms, how to play and perform solo and in ensembles and how to appreciate and describe a wide variety of music.

This is achieved through a range of learning opportunities and experiences delivered through an enquiry approach with some discrete aspects.  Children learn key knowledge and are encouraged to develop the skills of music such as performing, reading music and composing their own music.

PE at Hillside aims to encourage interest in and ability to complete different sporting activities whilst fostering a positive, lifelong relationship with exercise.  We want to give children an understanding of how to play different sports and the importance of exercise in keeping ourselves healthy.

This is achieved through a range of learning opportunities and experiences delivered as a discrete subject separate to our enquiry.  Children learn key knowledge and are encouraged to develop the skills of a sports person through explicit teaching of techniques and opportunities to apply them over time.

A year 6 sports person can:

  • Describe how they might create a gymnastic sequence and what it might include.
  • Describe ways to throw and catch and explain some rules to at least one sport.
  • Describe how they develop dance sequences to music.
  • Swim at least 25m using 3 different strokes.

Religious Education KKPDs

RE at Hillside aims to encourage interest in different world religions and views and how they fit into our world.  We want to give children an understanding of the different religions and how they impact on the daily lives of the followers and how the different religions and world views have an impact on the world around us.

This is achieved through a range of learning opportunities and experiences delivered as a discrete subject separate to our enquiry.  Children learn key knowledge and are encouraged to develop the skills of RE such as enquiring into what enables different communities to live together respectfully and reflecting on the different ways of life around us.

A year 6 RE student can:

  • Describe key religions and how they are followed.
  • Explain what they think about different religions and world views.
  • Describe what concepts such as belonging, meaning, purpose and truth mean to them.

PSHE at Hillside aims to encourage interest in and enjoyment of how we can develop ourselves to become healthy physically, mentally and within our relationships with others.  We want to give children an understanding of the different aspects of physical and mental health, how to keep their relationships healthy and themselves safe in the world.

This is achieved through a range of learning opportunities and experiences delivered as a discrete subject separate to our enquiry.  Children learn key knowledge and are encouraged to develop the skills of PSHE such as enquiring into what can help them to stay healthy physically and mentally and how they can develop healthy relationships with family and friends as well as keeping themselves safe through managing risks.

A year 6 PSHE student can:

  • Explain different ways they can stay physically and mentally healthy and describe the ones that are effective for them.
  • Describe risks to their safety and how they can manage them.
  • Describe how to make positive friendships and manage hurtful behaviour such as bullying.
